Ion distribution in concrete overlay, mapped by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), modified by an embedded zinc anode

Galvanic corrosion protection by embedded zinc anodes is an accepted technique for the of reinforcing steel in concrete. currents flow between anode and reinforcement due to potential difference that range a few hundred mV. The ion distribution was studied on two reinforced concrete specimens admixed with 3 wt.% chloride/wt. cement galvanically protected surface applied EZ-anode. On both specimens, glued geo-polymer-based chloride-free binder. At one specimen, EZ-anode operated 2,5 years, at other specimen not electrically connected reinforcement, this serves as reference. Both have been stored under identical conditions. (EZ-ANODE) cathode (steel reinforcement) laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) after 7 months, 12 years. Results LIBS studies activated years reference are reported. show diffusion ions contributes changes but migration, especially chlorides towards significant despite weak electric field – several millivolts generated galvanic current. chloride accumulate near zinc-anode water-insoluble zinc-hydroxy Simonkolleit.
